OBJECTIVE

Market or limit: speed or price

A market order buys or sells now at the best prices available. A limit order sets the worst price you accept and may never be filled.

Learning diagram: Market or limit: speed or price
Conceptual illustration — this chart is not live market data.

Concrete example

Limit buy at 0.95 while the price is 1.00: it is filled only if sellers come down to 0.95. If the price rises to 1.20 instead, you hold no position and lose nothing, but you missed the move.

Practical checklist

  • Decide whether speed or price matters more
  • Set a limit price you can justify
  • Accept that a limit order may not be filled
